The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Pittsburgh-UPMC invites medical students between their third and fourth years along with pre-medical students (gap year between undergraduate and medical school) to apply for a one-year clinical research fellowship, starting in July of 2025.

Description:This paid position will provide opportunity to work with distinguished faculty and will allow the applicant to enhance their chances at matching into an orthopaedic surgery residency the following cycle. The research fellow will be working directly with Dr. MaCalus V. Hogan, David Silver Professor and Chair, at the University of Pittsburgh-UPMC. Research projects will be varied across the spectrum of orthopaedics, ranging from orthopaedic foot and ankle, sports medicine, and traumatology. The research fellow will also collaborate with residents on existing projects or create new ones with assistance. Along with research duties, this fellowship offers the researcher ample time in the outpatient clinic and operating room. 

The researcher must be very independent, self-motivated, driven, and resourceful. As the fellow will be responsible for balancing many different projects simultaneously and communicating effectively with attendings, fellows, residents, and administrative staff, it is essential that interested applicants possess exceptional organizational skills and communication skills. 

 The goal of this fellowship is to strengthen the researcher’s application for orthopaedic surgery residency, expose the researcher to all facets of academic orthopaedics, and provide tools that will be essential to them throughout their research career as an orthopaedic surgeon. The fellowship duties include: 

  • Reviewing literature
  • Designing studies and gathering data
  • Creating and analyzing databases
  • Writing manuscripts for publication in journals
  • Submitting abstracts and preparing presentations for regional and national conferences

Highly motivated research fellows can publish and submit 10+ articles in peer-reviewed journals along with many more abstracts submitted to conferences, at which they will have the opportunity to present.

Weekly education conferences and cadaver lab/sawbones workshops will be available throughout the year. Grand Round meetings are held monthly by the Department and offer a wealth of information. This position requires the ability to travel between satellite hospitals and campuses.
