Duly Health and Care in Naperville, Illinois is searching for one highly motivated medical student to participate in orthopedic spine surgery clinical research for a 1-year position for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Position Title: Orthopedic Spine Surgery Research Fellow
Positions: 1 (One 3rd year or one unmatched 4th year medical student)
Duration: 1 year (flexible start/end date)
Where: Duly Health and Care, Naperville, Illinois and surrounding Chicagoland Area
Mentor: Dr. Ashish Patel, MD
Salary: $35,000 (funding for travel expenses to conferences may be available)
The Spine Center at Duly Health and Care performs over 1,000 spine surgeries per year on a mixture of degenerative and deformity pathologies. Dr. Ashish Patel, Chairman of Spine Surgery at Duly Health and Care, is seeking a highly motivated medical student who is interested in pursuing a research fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery. Dr. Patel is an orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained in spine surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, NY. The research fellow should expect multiple publications throughout the year and opportunities to network, participate in journal clubs, give case presentations, and get hands-on experience in a cadaver lab. There are many projects, both new and ongoing, that the research fellow will help to complete, with first authorship opportunities for any project that you significantly contribute to. Good candidates for this position display a good work ethic and dedication to match into an orthopedic surgery residency program. Dr. Patel and the other spine surgeons in the practice offer personalized mentorship to their research fellows and guidance through the orthopedic match process.

Duties of the research fellow will include, but are not limited to:
- Design, writing, editing and submission of IRB protocols,
- Managing college-level and medical students on projects,
- Design, coordination, and management of multiple retrospective and prospective studies across the spine department,
- Database collection, management, and statistical analysis,
- Participate in writing, editing, and submitting abstracts, manuscripts, and grant proposals,
- Give poster and podium presentations at national/international conferences
Qualifications:
- Current 3rd or unmatched 4th-year medical student in good standing with a strong dedication to match into an orthopedic surgery residency,
- Enthusiasm to learn aspects of clinical research and further their clinical knowledge of spine pathologies,
- Prior research experience is preferred but not required,
- Familiarity with statistical analysis and programs (SPSS, etc.) is preferred but not required,
- Must be organized, detail-oriented, highly motivated, and work well with others.
