2024-2025 Sports Medicine Research Fellow at Henry Ford Health  This is a paid, one-year, full-time Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery Research Fellowship opportunity. There is one position available. Ideal start date is June or July 2024. This position is not open to international applicants.  We are seeking one ambitious medical student (preferably between their 3rd and 4th year of medical school) to apply for a one-year paid sports medicine research fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Henry Ford Health. This is a full-time research fellowship that will provide highly-motivated applicants with significant opportunity for publication, implementation and design of new research projects, networking, and shadowing. This is a tremendous opportunity for students taking a gap year to strengthen their applications to orthopedic surgery residency. Research will primarily focus on outcome collection for sports medicine surgery patients with the opportunity to explore other orthopaedic surgery specialties. Research fellows will work under the direction of Dr. Vasilios Moutzouros (Detroit Pistons Head Team Physician), Dr. Thomas S. Lynch (Detroit Lions Head Physician) and Dr. Eric Makhni (Detroit Lions Team Physician).  Duration: 1 year  Responsibilities: 

  • Maintaining an extensive surgical database  
  • Lead a research team of medical students 
  • Oversee all ongoing projects (project design, data abstraction, moving projects forward) 
  • Collaborate with other research fellows and lead research group meetings  
  • Work closely alongside the PI and handle academic/research administrative responsibilities 
  • Organize and distribute surveys and questionnaires for pre- and post-operative patients 
  • Monitor IRB approval periods and submit IRB protocols, amendments, and reports 
  • Write, submit, and publish manuscripts in quality orthopaedic journals (JBJS, JSES, Arthroscopy) 
  • Manage abstract submission, conference registration, and grant submission deadlines 
  • Present posters and podiums at regional, national and even international conferences 

Qualifications: Required:  US Medical Student (M3) Relocation to Detroit, Michigan or surrounding areas  Good academic standing and strong interest in pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery Preferred: 3rd year medical students with prior experience in IRB writing, scientific writing, literature review, and/or statistical analysis *You will need proof of legal ability to work in the US.* Benefits of the Position:
