Who: U.S. medical students between the MS3 and MS4 years who are interested in pediatric orthopaedic surgery or orthopaedic surgery broadly

Where: Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Baltimore, Maryland

Salary: Paid fellowship with a $51,000 stipend for living and travel support for national conference presentations.


Job Summary:
           
The Johns Hopkins Poggi Pediatric Orthopaedic Research Scholar Award is a prestigious one-year fellowship designed for exceptional medical students seeking intensive training in pediatric orthopaedic clinical research. The Poggi Fellow becomes an integral member of the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery team, working directly with internationally recognized faculty including leaders in pediatric spine, trauma, hip disorders, sports medicine, and healthcare value research.
           This fellowship provides unparalleled exposure to high-impact research, robust mentorship, and clinical shadowing experience. Fellows participate in outpatient clinics, case conferences, operating room observation, and daily collaboration with faculty, residents, research staff, and multidisciplinary clinical teams. Graduates of the program consistently match into competitive orthopaedic surgery residency programs across the country.
          A fellow should expect to complete multiple manuscripts, national presentations, and high-quality abstracts. Prior Poggi Fellows have produced projects published in top-tier journals and presented at major national and international conferences. This fellowship is uniquely structured to prepare medical students for academic careers in pediatric and general orthopaedic surgery.

Responsibilities
The Poggi Fellow will take a leadership role in pediatric orthopaedic research and clinical activities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 


  • Conducting literature reviews, study design, data collection, and statistical analysis
  • Preparing manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations for submission to major journals and conferences
  • Coordinating and managing multiple simultaneous clinical research projects across pediatric trauma, spine, hip, sports, and value-based care
  • Participating in weekly outpatient clinics and gaining proficiency in pediatric musculoskeletal examination, imaging interpretation, and clinical decision-making
  • Observing surgical procedures across the pediatric orthopaedic subspecialty spectrum
  • Presenting research progress at faculty meetings, institutional conferences, and national/international venues
  • Collaborating closely with faculty, residents, statisticians, research staff, and multidisciplinary clinical teams
  • Maintaining high-level professional communication, organization, and project management across the research portfolio

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment as a 3rd-year medical student at an accredited U.S. medical school
  • Strong academic record and demonstrated interest in orthopaedic surgery, particularly pediatric subspecialties
  • Prior research experience
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-expectation research environment
  • Familiarity with research/statistical platforms is preferred but not required
