Position Title: Clinical Research Fellow

Who: US medical students interested in Orthopedic Surgery, wanting to bolster their CV before 4th year residency applications
Where: UAB Orthopedic Surgery - Division of Sports Medicine. Birmingham, AL
When: Beginning Approx. May (preferred) / Early June 2024 - June 2025
Salary: $25,000 salary, $5,000 paid travel for presentations at conferences
**UAB Sports Medicine is unable to sponsor foreign students or accept persons with equivalent MD medical training from other countries.
The division of sports medicine, including doctors Amit Momaya, Aaron Casp, Will Brabston, and Thomas Evely, are seeking an ambitious medical student (ideally between Third and Fourth Year) who is interested in pursuing a year-long clinical research fellowship at UAB Sports Medicine in Birmingham, AL.
Dr. Amit Momaya is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Division Head at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He also works as head team physician for the Birmingham Legion FC, and helps take care of UAB Athletics with Dr. Aaron Casp. Dr. Casp serves as the director of the Hip Preservation Program, is head team physician for Birmingham Bulls Hockey, and is a team physician for the US Ski Team. Dr. Brabston and Evely have full-spectrum sports medicine practices with focus on complex shoulder.
In this position you will have the opportunity to perform basic science biomechanical studies, clinical outcomes research and randomized controlled trials in an effort to complete research projects that will influence the way the world practices orthopedics. In this position, you will work closely with residents and faculty. There are ample opportunities for publications, multiple authorships on papers, as well as the ability to present research at conferences. Our goal is to support you in having a productive year and ultimately matching into a top tier residency program.
Prior fellows have been incredibly productive and has given them podium presentations and multiple publications.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain some additional clinical exposure in orthopedics as well, so as to have a leg-up going into 4th year of medical school. We all encourage our research fellows to join us in clinic or the operating room. Not only will you have a great CV, but also phenomenal exposure to orthopedics going into the match cycle.

The research fellow duties generally include:
- Coordination of all research projects including both clinical and basic science studies
- Submission of protocols and updates to the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
- Consenting patients for studies and performing pre-operative physical exams
- Collection of intra-operative data as well as following up with patients in clinic
- Collection and processing of patient samples
- Statistical analysis of data
- Drafting/editing of manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters
- Presenting research updates at weekly meeting with the sports medicine attendings
Prerequisites for the position include:
- Strong motivation for a career in orthopaedic surgery
- Evident interest in research
- Strong academic record
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Ability to independently and keep track of multiple projects
- Desire to learn and grow in
- Experience with statistical analysis is a plus
