Hello.

I wanted to ask people what they think I should choose. Here's the story:

I am taking a 2 week required orthopaedics rotation (which will be in a private setting full of arthroscopies pretty much). Then I am taking a 6 weeker at a busy county hospital full of trauma and some reconstructive cases.

I have 3 more weeks to do Ortho. The choice comes down to a 3 weeker at a Pediatric Hospital or at a place where reconstructive surgery is done almost exclusively.

Both places are excellent in terms of teaching and volume load.

But what will I be needing more entering the residency?
and
What will give me better (subjectively) chances at matching?

As a side note, I will have 2 aways on top of those rotations as well.

Thank you for your opinions.

Well with recon you'll be in the OR more, which is probably why people are choosing it, its funner. Personally I would do Peds because it seems that you havent had any peds yet. There's a chance that on one of your aways you'll be placed on a peds service, which will be much easier if you have done it before. It seems like you already have some experience with recon.

Joints is as bread-and-butter ortho as it gets. If you haven't had any exposure to it prior to residency, you should rotate through that service if for no other reason than to know what you're getting yourself into.

The surgical technique guides are available from the device manufacturer websites and can help you to understand the components of a knee or hip. Miller's chapter is excellent, and Secrets has some useful pimp questions.

Recon is fantastic.

I would do reconstructive because you get to do more...like others have said

Most Peds surgeons in general (not just ortho specific) don't let you touch the patients...And three weeks of watching people operate wouldn't be that fun

That being said, the thought of getting to see some peds stuff is a good thought

Reconstructive cases are cool...I like them, but I want to do Tumor/Reconstruction
