Anybody have any information on the programs in these two cities. I can't seem to find anyone who has much information about Maricopa in Phoenix, and I'm not sure about UMKC vs UK at KC. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

there is a world of difference b/t umkc and ku. the main thing you will hear/read about umkc is their amazing chairman. Amazing in the way that he comes out and says you will not like him, he does not want to be your freind, he will publicly humiliate you (supposedly in the interest of teaching) and basically say all things you can do and get fired. Anyone who interviewed here or knows someone who did knows how bad it is, and several people my day almost got up and left during his introduction. It is a shame too, cause although truman is a dump (the main hospital) they have a really good childrens hospital (hallmark gives it lots of donations) and st lukes (the private hospital) is nice as well. They do give extra consideration to people who did not match the first time around and people with a military background. Also be prepared to get a lot of ethical questions on you interview

KU- much more benign. they also spend time at the same childrens hospital. the call is heavy pgy2 and 3 but nice after that. the attendings seemed pretty mellow when i talked to them, and they have some good perks too( like a full rec center 1 1/2 blocks away). Overall facilities are avg to good. Overall they are a balanced program with no glaring strengths or weaknesses.

hope that helps

interviewed there this year. overall, this program has had some serious trouble in the last few years. evidentally, the program basically fell apart (everyone left) and the last couple of years has been about getting the program back on its feet. i went on the interview knowing that they were on probation with the ACGME and left feeling much better than when i came. the new chairman is probably the strongest @#$et of the program right now. he was there before the program fell apart and has taken the lead to get it back together. he came right out and told us that they were on probation and gave us a name and number of someone to talk to at the ACGME regarding their status. the chairman is almost positive that they will be fully accredited by this fall.

i asked the standard "what is your biggest weakness" to an attending that i interviewed with and got this response: "the quality of our residents"!!!!! that seemed like a big red flag!

from what i could gather, the residents work a ton of hours in not wonderful conditions. but, you do get to live in phoenix.

overall impression: this place will be great in about 4 years. this is when the first crop of "stable" residents will be chiefs. when it gets back on its feet, i think that this will become a very good program. this seemed to be the general feeling among applicants on my interview day.
