hey -
our school uses a lottery system to divide up m4 scheduling. i got a craptastic spot. as a result, all the ortho available rotations at my school filled up for the earliest months before i got a chance to register. (they don't offer too many.) so now i'm in a situation where in order to do aways, i need to do one of them before my home sub-I (i'm doing 2 aways. i'm a mediocre applicant.) not thrilled about this situation, obviously.

recommendations for how to handle it with the away program when i get there? (they approved my dates already, so i know i'm doing this first.) i figure be upfront about it being my first full ortho rotation, working hard and learning as much as possible.

anyone else do an away before doing a home rotation? is it as big of a no-no as i'm thinking it is? i'm kind of stuck, so hoping to make the best out of the situation.

thanks in advance
I did my first away in August, my home rotation in Sept., and my second away in Oct., so it can be done. I think my August rotation is going to be my top choice and I think it was fine with them that I hadn't done my home rotation yet. The caveat (

we dont expect you to know anything. Most places keep pimping to a minimum. Enjoy yourself. Life is too short to worry about things out of your control. Be attentive, sincere, and dont be afraid to ask questions

Dont stress too much about your predicament. I did not have a home ortho program so by default my first rotation was an away rotation and I ended up matching at that program. Your ortho IQ will probably be higher after a couple of rotations, but if you work hard, are likeable, and prepare well for your cases then no one will notice or if they notice they probably wont care. I agree with meatloaf that for the most part medical students are expected to know relatively little.

Also, I personally would not make too big of an issue regarding the fact that it is your first ortho rotation. If it comes up in casual conversation then it cant hurt to mention it, but otherwise just work hard and dont worry.

Meatloaf is right. You should enjoy yourself and don't worry about something that is beyond your control. Just worry about doing a good job on your away rotation. It may turn out to be your number 1 choice next year. Bone_Jock had a great post back in May about specific skills to impress as 4th years. Read it before starting your rotation. It's very informative and contains valuable information. Good luck on your rotation!
