I am a third year medical student, and I have an elective rotation coming up in Ortho. It's with a small town doc I know with the intention of learning a lot and getting a good LOR before I begin my two week rotation at my home program and away rotations.

I was wondering what books you guys think are the best tp review during this rotation and during my away rotations. Most people tell me that the most important thing for a med student to know is anatomy. What resources do you feel are the best for reviewing anatomy for ortho? Also, what about other books - Handbook of Fractures, etc?

I personally thought that a good book was Netter's Concise Atlas for Ortho

It outlines a lot of the anatomy (at least everything I got questioned about) and it also has some physical exam sections that are good for quick reference when you're in clinic. Plus it fits in your white coat pocket so you can have it on you.

I also got a cheap, older copy of Hoppenfeld's Surgical Exposures in Ortho

Not everyone I know got this book but those of us who had it really liked it because if you know what cases you're going to see the next day it shows the approaches and relevant anatomy which is more efficient than just looking at an atlas.

Handbook of fractures is a must-have for your ortho rotations I think. It also fits in your white coat pocket but the more recent versions are getting huge in comparison to some of the ones Ive seen from just a couple years ago.

+1. Get these three books. That's all you'll need. You'll use them as a resident too.

I second those notions, with the added detail that you can find all these books as .chm files, which is the ebook reader format, and if you have a smart phone you can put them on your phone. I have all these texts plus more on my HTC phone and don't have to carry excess weight in my white coat with numerous pocket books.

Other things that are good to reference before cases is Miller's Review text (http://www.amazon.com/Review-Orthopaedi ... 36-9010740).

Also, if you can get one of your resident buddies to give you their AAOS login you can access JAAOS (Yellow Journal) articles that have outstanding reviews written for the general orthopaedist. Or, perhaps, your school's library has a subscriptioin, but with the login you can print articles from home.

If you have time in the evening to sleep or stay up late and read and risk being late the next day, I'd suggest you get some rest and be on top of your game. Your job as a 4th year is to show up, on time, be helpful, and not be annoying trying to show everyone that you read an article the night before. Good luck.

I'm just a lowly MSII, but I just started reading through "Gowned and Gloved Orthopaedics: Introduction to Common Procedures" by Drs. Sheth and Lonner and it seems very helpful. Elders please correct me if I'm wrong.

3/3. Best 3 books in my opinion with Netter's being the main study tool, Hoppenfeld's for the night before the surgeries, and Fractures as you're getting called to the ED.

Ortho Secrets has some info that is often not found in the aforementioned books. Good info on hips and sports that you would not necessarily find in netter's/fracture handbook. If u happen to be on any non-trauma rotation
