I'm looking for a little help for a place that I would enjoy/fit in the best. I'm have a strong interest in doing sports medicine or hands and I'm not really interested in doing a ton of trauma. I enjoy the outdoors, ie mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding, etc. I currently engaged to another MSIII that is going to be going into pediatrics, so I guess the place needs to have a pediatric residency (or my marriage probably isn't going to work out...haha). Also, I'm not heavy on research and don't really have much of in interest in doing much in the future. I really just want a fun place with a good work environment where I can work my butt off, learn a lot and come out well trained. Any current residents or MSIV's that matched feel like their residency would be a good fit for me? Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks for your input.
I have a feeling that UTAH will be mentioned in this thread. Its home to the "greatest snow on earth," mountains that are literally just outside the back door of University Hospital, and also home to IMHO the strongest, most well balanced ortho program in the west if not nation. Also, Primary Childrens Medical Center is home to a very well respected, pediatrics residency. Check it out. Any questions PM me. I am an MSIII and this is my home institution.

Haha I was going to mention Utah as well. It might be worth rotating there since they interview so few people. Also the guy who invites people for interviews is a peds Ortho guy, so he might know the chairman of the peds dept there.

Dude, you're a 3rd year medical student. How do you think you can accurately say things like Utah is the most well balanced program in the west? You don't know what you are talking about. Go back to studying for your OB-GYN shelf.

BTW, Utah is a solid program, but there are definitely better programs in the West. That being said, the skiing and mtn biking opportunities are very nice, if thats what you're looking for in a residency program.

In addition to the obvious programs in the West and Northeast, I would check out both Marshall and WVU programs if you are looking for proximity to outdoor activity. Snowshoe Mountain has probably the best skiing / snowboarding in the Mid-Atlantic, and is a great mountain bike park in the summer. It is about 2 - 2.5 hours from Morgantown and 3-3.5 hours from Huntington. There is also Canaan Valley and other resorts in the area. WVU has historically been a university program with a "blue collar" feel, but I believe has become more academic under Dr. Emory. I rotated there years ago and loved it. Marshall is a new program, so I do not know much other than whats on the web site.

UVa. Great sports and hand programs, amazing town (Charlottesville) with lots of cultural and outdoor activities, enthusiastic and hard working residents. Lots of trauma during Roanoke rotations which are "quasi-community" with lots of autonomy/etc. Plus Bobby Chhabra has to be among the best PDs in the country.
