Hi,
I am devastated. I am an FMG (South America) and I am just as passionate over Ortho as everybody in here. My Step 1 Scores came in and I did very poorly (206/85). I am not very good at standardized tests but the results didn't reflect the work I put into studying.
Somehow I think I can try hard and make a reasonable Comeback in the Step 2 cos it is the only lifeline that I have now. What I wanted to know is if it is worth it??? Can a very good Step 2 scores overturn the tables or my mediocre Step 1 scores have excluded me automatically no matter what I do.
I am trying to set up 2 Rotations in the USA during winter and they will be my trump cards to show something that the test can't show. In terms of research..I only did one and it is unpublished yet but I am even ready to take a year off after graduation(next year) to do Research Fellowship if that could get me publications.
I just want your Honest opinions? Has it ever been done? Or I shd stop the Wild Goose Chase at this point?

Thanks and Blesses.

PS: Sorry if this thread came out as an attention Seeker. But sincerely I am desperate
can be done, know people with scores similar to yours and matched. Being a FMG is a double whammy, so you will have to truely shine on your rotations. You may have to do a year or two of research, ultimately it will be very hard, but if this is what you want, no one can keep you from that. You will have to make your oppertunities because doors will not just open for you, you will have to open them.

god bless and good luck

I think your best bet is to post a high score on step 2. Many programs may not offer you an interview because of your step 1 score, but a strong step 2 score will put you back in the running.

Not to burst your bubble more, but being an FMG is a bigger strike against you than your board scores. According to match data, ortho has the lowest percentage of FMGs of all specialties. That coupled with your step I score is going to be very hard to overcome. Your best shot is likely to take a research fellow position somewhere and spend several years publishing and developing relationships with orthopaedic faculty.
