Has anyone already been to CMC for an interview? If so, how'd it go? I hear that last year, some of the questions were pretty random and that it was you and a panal of faculty. Still the case?

format for carolinas: two rooms with five interviewers in each room and one room with just the chairman. the panel interviews are essentially good cop, bad cop. (residents confirmed that they have been doing it this way for years.) for me, the good cop room was a lot of questions about family, free time, etc. the bad cop room was much more formal with questions about the healthcare system, how can they know that i would be a team player at cmc, etc. i didn't think the questions were random, but some were very detailed. in talking to other applicants, everyone went through pretty much the same thing, though some seemed to get hit a bit harder in the bad cop room. the room with the chairman was basically chit-chat. he's pretty arrogant, and many of the applicants were a bit put off by his opening remarks (you'll see what i mean when you get there).

Interviewed this year. CMC is a sweet program, however the interview day has the potential to be a little stomach turning if you aren't given at least a little heads up. Overall, it's a pretty well run day. The Residency coordinator is awesome, which I believe is in part why the program seems to function so well. Each applicant gets three interviews, one with the chair, two with a panel of five each. The chair interview is very laid back, no tough questions just trying to get to know you and your motivations for being in his program. Then comes the fun part. I'd heard in the past that they do this whole one panel is nice to you, the other tries to rough you up a little (even one of the residents asked if they were doing that this year). I can't really say that I thought that was the case in my experience. Maybe some else thought otherwise. I did think that there was a definite difference in the overall atmosphere/questions asked between rooms. If I recall, one panel was pretty focused on details of my application, particularly my personal statement. The second panel seemed to be overwhelmingly questions that had little pertinence to my application including several current events issues and what I think should be done. In any event, if you've been on panel interviews by the time you visit CMC I wouldn't sweat it (I hadn't, and was pretty nervous going in).
My advice is to enjoy the day, check out the facilities, and take it all in as there are few programs that compare to CMC in my mind if your are looking for a small size/high volume/big name program. And maybe watch a little pre-game CNN. Good luck.

thought I'd toss this back up there to see if anyone had a comment from 11/10. I want to go there so bad I'm going to wet myself with this "bad cop" stuff since ALL my interviews have been so benign, if it is indeed still true.

True, good cop bad cop rooms. Can be freaky and questions are not about your application, just on your toes stuff. Interview with chair is painful, he is a high and mighty type. Bring a diaper if your gonna wet yourself, might be a strike if htey see you damp..
