This data clearly indicates that overall orthopedics is getting harder to match into every year. Just 2 years ago the average for MATCHED applicants was 238 a jump this year to 240 obviously indicates that the entire applicant pool is getting stronger. No longer is a score in the mid to high 230s competitive. This data clearly indicates the absolute importance of having a backup program ready in case things don't work out on match day. Its going to keep getting harder to match into orthopedics and I don't think simply taking a year off and doing research or a prelim is going to be of any help in this battle. The way I see it is have a backup ready and allow yourself some peace of mind that you will have a job after graduating medical school. At least that what I plan on doing now.

I think what's even more telling is the 1.5 applicants for every 1 spot of ortho. Something like 310 medical students had their dreams crushed last match. I think it helps put things into perspective that every interview at any program is precious.
