I vaguely remember a post about this a while back, but could not find it in all the hooplah as of late.
What is the conventional wisdom about contacting your top couple of programs to let them know this? I feel that many programs only want to be your TOP choice and that letting them know only that they are in your top 3 might actually hurt you. Any advice?
I would go ahead and let your top choice program know that it is your top choice. I would let the next two programs know that it will be "very highly ranked and very strongly considered" by you. Of course, you can send the same letter to your next nine choices if you really like. I don't think it hurts you. If anything, I think expressions of interest can only help, as long as it is done tactfully.
