I am a third year student who would like to end up in Washington, DC for residency. Does anyone know much about the Georgetown program? I've heard that it is a necessity to do an away there to have a chance. Does anyone know how the program stacks up to other national programs? Any info is much appreciated!

all i know is that they have like a million (okay, maybe 25-30) people this year doing ortho, so that right there decreases your chances.

I have second hand knowledge of Georgetown. It's a fairly academic program, really tough month if you rotate there -- you get pimped CONSTANTLY and you're EXPECTED to know ortho. The students there apparently have to read Wiesel's text that he wrote as an intro to ortho, and it's detailed. If you rotate there, your chances increase (i.e. you'll get consideration), but 1-2 out of the 3 spots is usually from the home school. So unless you REALLY want to go there, it's not a wise pick of a program to rotate at. They go to Fairfax (and arlington i think) for trauma, Dupont for peds. I think Georgetown has an excellent reputation nationally, but because it's such an in-bred kind of program, other applicants don't know much about it, because we all know that it's a waste to think about it cause you really have zero shot if you're not from there (unless you rotate).

I definitely viewed Georgetown as a waste of $25. I wish I had known all of that stuff before the applications. DC is one of those tough areas. I would have loved to match down there because all of my college friends live there, but Georgetown is very inbred, and GW supposedly isn't great. I think there were 29 applicants from Georgetown this year, and the rotation as described by IamNikolas sounds completely miserable. If you want to consider Maryland, they have some really good programs that would be worth rotating at. Union Memorial and University of Maryland are probably the two best. For UMd you could live 45 minutes from DC(minus traffic).

There are three available spots at Georgetown. If you are a Gtown student or you rotate here then you are put into a separate pool. Generally two spots come from this pool but sometimes all three. If you want to go to georgetown then you should rotate here.
