Hi folks,
Looking for some sane advice from someone who is in the know; preferably NOT your gunner type who has 280/280/AOA/Honors all/19 Pubs. Here's my situation: I'm a 3rd year medical student who is literally in the last week of M3 and quite frankly, I'm in love. I had considered Surgery and Anesthesia because I recognize that I belong in the OR. My current plan was to apply for surgery or Anes, and have Sub-Is set up in both but my team and attending have been strongly encouraging me to reconsider Ortho. Quite honestly I have.
Looking at grades and scores I'm your average Ortho applicant (50% Honors / Pass, 225 Step 1 I'm barreling toward a high Step 2). My aprehension stems from the fact that I literally start M4 in two weeks and have no Sub-Is, no research, no letters. Just a man crush on the specialty. I honestly don't know what a path to an ortho residency would look like for someone like me.
I do have a strong engineering background in another field with several pubs, patents and many presentations as well as an advanced degree. In a meeting with one of the Ortho higher ups regarding this he was rather equivocal about my chances. He specifically mentioned that I wasn't completely unrealistic but at the same time he didn't offer up any ideas to help me achieve the Ortho goal. He did mention that I'd face a lot of competetition from within my class for interviews because I'm at a very strong Ortho school. Reading between the lines I take this as a non-endorsement.
Some of the residents have suggested a research year as an "M5" in the department. Others have said I should try to match TY Surgery and reapply Ortho in the 2015 match (when things become really unfavorable in terms of students:spots ratio).
Has anyone been in or know an Ortho who has been in a similar situation? What does a path to matching Ortho look like for someone like me? Is there one?
I'd love to hear advice on this and am grateful for the input.
TL:DR: Discovered Ortho the last week of M3, would do it but have nothing set up to build an app, what paths are there to victory, if any?
