I would suggest either putting it under Abstracts (other than published) and put submitted, or under your relevant Research experience and mention you submitted an abstract.

People submit abstracts all the time that get shot down. You should only really list them if they've been accepted. ORS and Academy aren't the conferences that accept everything coming through the door...

I'd either list it in the poster/oral presentation section or not list it at all (a single poster presentation is probably not going to make/break your app)... and here's why: the first "PEER REVIEWED" part is what would encourage me to place it in the OTHER section as poster/oral pres are not peer reviewed. The first is basically meant for papers and abstracts for papers.

No matter which section you put it in (even if you have to get creative about tagging it as only a submission), you're probably going to get asked about it at some interviews and, while most won't care where you list it, there'll be SOME research snob out there who'll grill your jibblies for trying to oversell yourself. I actually had someone PUBMED my list of pubs (there were only a couple so it didn't take long) so make sure that you list them EXACTLY as they are recorded so that such a search is easy...

Not in the sense that ERAS means, but they are peer reviewed.

I forgot about the "Other" section, that would also be a good place to put it.

Hmmm, thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Still not sure what to do. I like the idea of using the "Other" publication type, but this tab doesn't have any way to designate status (submitted vs accepted vs completed).

On a similar note, how do you think you should list a publication if you are acknowledged in a paper, but are not an author on it due to author limits (CORR only allows 5 total and I was #6)? Just list it in "Peer Reviewed Journals" without your name in the author list? or maybe add my name in parenthesis?

If you are not listed as an author then you are not an author, sorry.

I would list the project under research experience and state the research was published and you were acknowledged.

So, how can an abstract be including in the peer reviewed section than?
I have a couple abstracts that are "published" in the journal supplements that accompany various scientific annual meetings that were also poster presentations. So wouldn't they be including in the peer reviewed papers and/or abstracts section? also, kind of a basic question but publiction name is journal title, correct?

In general it is understood that most abstracts submitted for consideration for either poster or platform presentation at a scientific conference are indeed directly related to a publication or is part of a publication. Nearly all conferences publish a proceedings of the conference...however that is not considered a publication, but more as a declaration of your presentation (poster or platform) at the meeting itself. For instance I had 4 publications that lead to 7 abstracts at various meetings (never the same abstract twice, different parts of a larger study)

Article, case report that is published in a journal = a publication.

Abstract submitted for conference that is accepted for poster or platform presentation = poster/platform presentation (Being in the proceedings of the conference simply is proof that you actually were there)

Quit trying (not you specifically, but those in general) to inflate your numbers. Some interviewers at some programs specifically asked to see copies of my publications. You'll look pretty stupid if you list something as a publication that doesn't exist.

Not only did I get asked to see my actual abstracts, I got asked why I had abstracts that hadn't been made in to papers yet. Keep that in mind.

I couldn't agree more (abstracts leading to the actual publication and that the abstracts are not published, hence the quotations.) I guess my confusion comes from the fact that I don't understand how a abstract, as it were, can be published. Thus, I don't understand why eras has abstract in that category. certainly, not trying to inflate just want to make sure it goes in the correct spot, which sounds like that is in the poster section...thanks

I know many of the conference proceedings and abstracts of different IEEE society meetings are listed individually in Pubmed with their own PMID numbers. Not sure if they are also presented as a poster/talk as well or just a collection of short papers, but perhaps that would count as a "published" abstract.
