The Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center (PHSC) and the Hand Rehabilitation Foundation is accepting applications for a one-year research fellowship position starting Summer 2024. Preference will be given to 3rd year and 4th year medical students, unmatched 4th year medical students, and medical school graduates with both an interest in and familiarity with clinical research.
Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center/Hand Rehabilitation Foundation Research Fellowship Overview: The Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center (PHSC) and the Hand Rehabilitation Foundation is accepting applications for a one-year research fellowship position starting in June to August 2024. Preference will be given to 3rd year and 4th year medical students, unmatched 4th year medical students, and medical school graduates with both an interest in and familiarity with clinical research. The Research Fellow will work closely with residents, fellows, attendings, and hand therapy colleagues to complete high quality research studies in a busy private/academic practice. Fellows will have the opportunity to pursue and publish clinical, biomechanical, anatomical, and basic science research to build their CV and gain experience in orthopaedic surgery. The Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center has 7 clinical hand surgery fellows each year, all of which are responsible for publishing at least one manuscript. In addition to being involved with each hand surgery fellow’s project, the Research Fellow will have opportunities to originate novel research, craft and develop research methodologies and protocols, write/apply for IRBs and grants, write and publish book chapters/review articles as well as presenting at regional and national conferences. The Research Fellow would be expected to submit and publish at minimum 10 manuscripts during the year. The fellowship also provides the Research Fellow with opportunities to partake in didactic conferences, journal clubs, cadaveric dissections, surgical skills training, as well as industry sponsored events with the hand surgery fellowship class. Most importantly, the Research Fellow will gain mentorship that will extend beyond the year spent at the Hand Center.

Job Duties:
- Manage PHSC prospective, retrospective, review, biomechanical, and anatomic studies with residents, fellows, attendings, and hand therapists.
- Consent and enroll patients in prospective studies.
- Draft and submit IRB proposals and renewals.
- Data collection and statistical analysis.
- Write book chapters and review articles with attending mentors.
- Prepare and submit research manuscripts for publication.
Qualifications:
- 3rd year or 4th year medical students, unmatched 4th year medical students, medical school graduates interested in hand and upper extremity research
- Strong academic record
- Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- Prior research experience is preferred
