Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center invites ambitious individuals, including rising fourth-year medical students, matriculated medical students, and those in previous research positions with an interest in orthopaedic surgery to apply for a paid one-year clinical research fellowship starting Summer 2025. Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center is a Level I Trauma Center dedicated to providing excellent care for patients and top-tier education for its orthopaedic surgery residents. Those trained at St. Vincent’s embody a strong work ethic, develop a vast knowledge base, receive extensive exposure to orthopaedic pathology, and cultivate a myriad of technical skills. As the orthopaedic research fellow, you would work very closely with residents and faculty on a daily basis and you are welcome to join the team for daily morning didactics. Research fellows have the freedom to work with attendings whose interests align with their own, and work with a diverse group of orthopaedic surgeon subspecialists. Applicants are required to have a very strong work ethic, excellent organization skills, as well as immense self-discipline and self-motivation. A strong interest in pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery is also necessary. Those with previous publications in medical literature, or experience in roles related to research coordination would be preferred, although these are not pre-requisites. 

The ambitions of accepted research fellows will be fostered through opportunities to strengthen their application for residency, expose the fellow to clinical orthopedics and orthopaedic surgery, teach research skills that will be invaluable in for their career in medicine, and possibly even foster technical skills (DO/MD applicants only). The research fellow will have the opportunity to pursue their own research ideas, as well as help fulfill and complete a vast portfolio of ongoing projects. The research fellow will work very closely with residents and is expected to demonstrate a similar work ethic that is exhibited by all attendings and surgical residents in the program. The research fellow can expect to produce multiple, at minimum 10, published or presented works as an author throughout their year. 

Research Fellow Responsibilities:
-  Develop research ideas, review literature, and design studies.
-  Write and prepare manuscripts, posters, and presentations.
-  Facilitate manuscript/project submissions.
-  Present abstracts, posters, presentations.
-  Coordinate and conduct regular research meetings with faculty and residents.
-  Delegate and coordinate with medical students who have an interest in orthopaedic surgery.
-  Educate and enroll patients in research studies (may involve calling patients).
-  Work with hospital research coordinators and IRB staff to receive project approval.
-  Collect, organize, and analyze collected clinical data (databases: Excel, Patient IQ, etc.).
-  Maintain research relationships with partnering institutions and attendings.
-  Work closely with PD and faculty to further their residency application (MD/DO applicants).
