Reply Letters or Calls?
just wondering if anyone has been getting any follow up calls or letters expressing things like how much a program wants you. it seems like from last year that this was mostly a process that took place in late january and early february, but i would like to know if anyone has been getting them (besides the infamous mayo letter!).

I hesitate to answer this post considering the controversy the MAYO letter generated. But anyway, got a letter from Hopkins 12/28. It seemed like more of a general group thank you letter than a "we want you to come here" letter. Essentially, it stated that the faculty were very impressed with this years group of applicants and concluded by saying something like "rest @#$ured your candicacy is highly valued here", whatever that means. Anyway, thought people may be curious.

Got the same letter from Hopkins...hopefully it was just a group letter, because if it was tiered letter, I took it as a bad sign! Anyone get a different one?

I got the same letter as well from Hopkins. I think some programs just send out routine thank you letters regardless of how they rank their candidates.

Reply Phone call
I got a curious phone call today from a chief at a program that I interviewd at (I'd rather not say where). Basically, he told me that they ranked me in the "top 10", but he wanted to know what my intentions were...i.e. he was trying to squeeze out of me whether I would rank them No. 1...it DEFINITELY sounded like I would be moved further up their rank list if I told him that. I was honest and told him that I would rank them in my top 4, but probably not No. 1. I was totally caught off-guard, and although I was at first flattered by the call, I resented it afterwards...I thought for a second about telling him what he wants to hear, but thought I may pay the price later. So I pretty much hurt my chances of ending up there, and now am doubting whether I played "the game" right. Anyone else been subjected to this? I mean, if it's your No. 1 choice calling you, it's one thing. But if it's a program that you won't rank No. 1, how can you give them that commitment? I know this is all illegal, but I found out first-hand today that it does happen.

Reply HMM, tough one
that indeed does stink. I think it sucks that programs do that crap just so their egos are boosted by saying "we only went to #5 on our list" if they have 4 residents. They tell all of us to rank where we want to go honestly and not try to rank highly where you think you might have a good chance. I guess it depends on A)what you percieve your overall chances of matching period B)if you have a problem with lying to them if you are not really gonna rank them No. 1. I sure hope i am not faced with that dilemma. Some people would tell you that you should have told them what they wanted to hear and that that is how the game is played. ANY chances of at least telling us the state this place is in (unless there is no other prog in the state)???

I'd rather not identify the program. It's in the Northeast (and it's NOT Pitt!)

By the way, I think if this program played by the rules, I'd be pretty safe to be in their "top 10". I mean it's a great program but definitely not one of the biggies. But since they pull this stuff, they may very well not go further than 5 or 6 down their list if enough people give them the commitment they want.

Oh well.
