[FUNDED] 2026–2027 Brown University Sports Medicine Research Fellowship at University Orthopedics 
Location: Providence, Rhode Island

The 2026–2027 Brown University Sports Medicine Research Fellowship at University Orthopedics, founded by Brett D. Owens, MD, is led by Dr. Owens, Dr. Stephen Marcaccio, and Dr. Nicholas Lemme. The leadership team is seeking a highly motivated 3rd-year medical student for a fully immersive, year-long fellowship designed to accelerate orthopedic surgery residency preparation through high-level research engagement, direct mentorship, and substantial hands-on experience with prospective clinical trials, data analytics, and sports medicine outcomes research. This position offers extensive faculty interaction, surgical exposure, and a structured pathway toward significant authorship and presentation opportunities.

4th-year medical students may also apply; however, priority will be given to students between their 3rd and 4th years of medical school.
The fellow will be directly involved in all facets of the research process, including:
  • Day-to-day coordination and management of local and multi-site clinical trials
  • Development of study questions and hypotheses
  • Literature review and study design
  • IRB submissions and regulatory coordination
  • Data collection, database management, and quantitative data analysis
  • Interpretation of findings, abstract and manuscript preparation
  • Creation of presentations for regional and national meetings
The position offers extensive mentorship and interaction with orthopedic attendings, fellows, residents, and students, with the opportunity for substantial publication and presentation output over the course of the year.

Position Details
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Where: University Orthopedics & Brown University, Providence, RI
  • When: Start date May/June 2026 (2026–2027 research year)
  • Salary: $30,000 annual salary (funded position)
Primary Responsibilities
  • Collect, manage, and organize data across active studies, including tracking projects through manuscript submission
  • Oversee daily operations of local and multi-site clinical trials, including communication with study teams and sponsors as applicable
  • Help coordinate research meetings and seminars; support projects involving undergraduates, medical students, residents, and fellows 
  • Conduct targeted literature reviews to support ongoing and new projects
  • Perform quantitative data analyses of clinical and research datasets
Preferred Qualifications & Characteristics
  • Strong motivation for a career in orthopaedic surgery
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Prior clinical research and/or clinical trial experience (highly preferred)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work efficiently, proactively, and independently within a busy research environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); prior experience with databases and basic statistics is a plus
