First of all, congrats to all of those that matched today! I was one of the unfortunate ones this past Monday and had to scramble into a gen surg prelim spot. I will be applying to ortho again but want to know what to do to change my app before September 1st. I was told I was an average ortho applicant and just fell victim to the numbers game. Here are a few questions I hope yall can answer...
1. What are the stats on prelims matching into ortho (either pg 1 or 2)?
2. What institutions will let you do externships in April/May/June?
3. Is there any way to ask the prelim surg program to let you set up your year in accordance with ACGME requirements for ortho interns in hopes of grabbing a pg2 spot?
4. Are there any programs that let interns rotate as externs during their vacation?
5. How friendly are ortho depts towards gen surg prelims within their institutions looking to evetually do ortho?
6. Is it a good idea to an externship at a place that already interviewed you?
7. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!
