How important do you all think it is to do your residency/fellowship in the geographic region where you would like to eventually practice/settle down?

From talking with various attendings, it seems that geographic ties are important if you want to work in a group practice in a particular region. You will establish yourself in that region and get a head start on jobs in the area if you do a residency there. If you want to go into academics, the region where you do your residency seems less important. In addition, it would seem more important out West where there are only one or two residency programs per state, and therefore you have your pick of the jobs in that state when you are finished. Just an opinion...
