That's the one that I bought last year. It's pretty good. I don't think they ever made a 2nd edition. They just keep re-printing it. I guess the anatomy hasn't changed. It doesn't have a lot of the special tests for certain joints named after people that probably came after he wrote this book, but I think it's still a good book for an intern or medical student.

"PE of the Spine and Extremities" is a great resource to have, but I think many of the aforementioned references to Hoppenfeld are for another book called "Surgical Exposures...", which in my experience is a must-have for a resident.

There is also a hoppenfeld's orthopaedic neurology. All of these books are good for residents or students. The surgical exposures is great to bone up on anatomy that you will see before a case.

I agree with everything mentioned above. Physical Exam of the Spine and Extremities is a good book. Lots of pictures. Pretty good description of the various tests. But like Mayday, there are a lot of tests (probably newer) that are not mentioned, specifically sports medicine exam stuff. I think it's a good book nevertheless. Surgical Exposures is a great book and a must have for RESIDENTS as Dr_Dre said. As a med student, I don't think I would buy it. It's like $200 dollars. I'd go with Netters Orthopaedic Atlas. That's also a great anatomy book, not procedure specific, but great for med students. It also has sections about various phsyical exam stuff, which can complement or even substitute for Physical Exam of Spine and Extremities.

I used both anatomy texts. I bought Netter's Orthopaedic Atlas and checked out Surgical Exposures from the library. I still believe that Surgical Exposures can still be used by medical students interested in a better understanding of surgical anatomy. Netter's is nice as a pocketbook but doesn't illustrate the level by level approach in a surgery with focus on the structures that are heavily pimped.
