Hi! Does anyone know anything about the housing provided at HSS? I read that it is mandatory that you live in their housing if you match there. Do they allow pets or spouses? Thanks!
all the residents live in the provided subsidized housing. there are studios, one bedrooms, and two bedrooms. interns generally get studios but if they have a spouse or significant other they will try to give them a one bedroom. as you advance you get a bigger place and by the time you are a 4 you generally have a 2 bedroom. the places are really nice. i dont know about pets

I know of at least 2 residents that have dogs. As far as the housing goes, they now have a housing committee that meets to decide about who will live where. Seniority obviously helps in what you end up getting, but the process is more fair now for residents with families not getting stuck in small apartments. The apartment building is right down 71st St from HSS, in between 1st and 2nd Ave (about 2 blocks from the hospital), which is probably one of the reasons why it's mandatory to live there.

This kind of sounds like the housing lottery when I was in undergrad.

Thanks so much for your responses - sounds like a great set-up. I definitely did not want to have to make a dog vs. HSS decision next year (if I should be so fortunate) and I didn't want to schedule an away there without knowing the deal. Thanks!

The information above is all generally correct. A few comments:

1) While it is "mandatory" to live in the housing, they are willing to consider extenuating circumstance. For example, a resident who graduated 2 years ago lived in the suburbs with his wife & 4 children.

2) Pets, spouses, and children are definitely allowed.

3) In general, the housing is an excellent perk of the program. People who have experience living in or trying to find an apartment in NYC are the most impressed with the arrangement.

4) Apartment allocation is controlled by a housing committee made up of residents, so it is a more equitable and friendly process than the typical housing lottery. Given reasonable expectations (single interns live in studios, married residents live in 1 bed room apartments, senior residents with children get 2 bedroom), everyone has been satisfied.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but just wanted to see if there are any changes to this housing policy. I am married with a dog and have an interview scheduled here. From what it sounds like, this shouldn't be a problem but wanted to make sure.

Thanks

Yep, everything is the same as described by Henn, except there havent been any exceptions to living in the mandatory housing for several years (since before my time, and I am a PGY-5). In fact, in the past 5 years, rent has not gone up (and is very heavily subsidized).

hope this helps.
