The rumor I hear about HSS is that they actually send applicants three different letters - one is a really really good letter, the second a really good letter, and the third a good letter - depending on where you are on their rank list. I have heard rumors of people comparing letters to see where they stand. Keep in mind that the info I am giving is all heresay and conjecture. I hope this helps.
