A similar thread was started about this time of year last year with a decent amount of success. So, figured we could resurrect it for the 2011 match process. Keeping with last years format I'll start it up.

Total Apps: 60
Programs applied who have offered interviews: 27
Rejections: 2 (OSU, Wake) - Didn't want to go there anyway
Interviews: 13 (1 from away at Iowa)
Waitlisted: 0

Stats: Step1 250ish Step2 NA (take Dec 1), not AOA, ortho research (1 pub, 2 presentations, 2 abstracts) 1 non-ortho pub (cardiology), mostly honors in pre-clinical and clinical courses/rotations.

B4B out
Obviously we'll have to update these posts as time goes on but here goes...

Total Apps: 72
Rejections: 4
Interviews: 6 (one from home program and not including unofficial invite from one of my two aways)
Waitlisted: 1

Stats: Step I - low 230s!!, Step II - 270s (released in Oct), CS already taken/passed/released. Preclinical grades - mix of H/HP/P. Clinical Grades - all honors except a rads electives. Senior AOA. One ortho poster and one abstract submitted.

Total Apps: 70
Programs applied who have offered interviews: 14
Rejections: 3 (Wake, UNC, Yale). Thanks, New Haven.
Interviews: 4
Waitlisted: 0
AOA: Senior
Publications: A few publications, a handful of abstracts, a chapter.
Letters: 3 orthopods from 3 instititutions; 1 medicine (universally sent)

The other things we should track on this forum (not necessarily this thread) are:
1) Which schools only interview rotators.
2) Which schools guarantee rotators an interview.

Don't forget to set your clocks back.

Note to B4B: Of 38 programs that have released interviews, you applied to 27 of them. Is this strategic? I'm partially kidding, partially curious; the latter because it would make sense if you applied to 100 schools, but you only chose 60.

Note to B4B]

Honestly can't tell here if you are trying to flame me or really are just curious. So, I think I'll give you the benefit of the doubt assume curiosity rather than douchebag.

To answer the question. Of course there was a strategy. This whole process is all about strategy. However, that being said my strategy is not what you would think. I have a family, hence cost of living and family safety are important. I chose not to apply to programs in large cities (i.e. NY, Chi, etc), so that immediately eliminated a good number of programs. Next, I stratified most programs into 1 of 3 groups; top tier, mid tier, low tier. This was more or less arbitrary as there is no true ranking system as you already know. I then picked programs based on word of mouth, researching websites, and geography. In the end I had 60 programs. I will admit, however, that the majority of programs fell into the middle tier group (go figure... upper tier programs in small towns are scarce). As for my invites. I have been invited by programs from all three tiers. Completely, random with one invitation from my one AI (Iowa). That's it. Pretty much the norm for most people I guess.

I guess I don't understand why that would be so unbelievable ortho-fx?

**note to all browsing this thread.. don't be intimidated or for that matter, reassured by this.. the number of interviews, and when you get them really has no bearing on whether or not you match.. You just have to impress one program

and remember, you can interview at a lot of places.. be really tired and have a cruddy attitude towards a few of them because you're thinking you're the cats meow... this can be hurtful..

so be aware...

Thanks. No, I didn't mean to imply that it was unbelievable nor was I trying to be sarcastic. In fact I thought it was interesting that of the initial wave of 30 programs, you had applied to a high percentage of them despite an overall (relatively) smaller-ish number of programs. Anyway you're doing something right, so congratulations. Look forward to seeing you on the trail.
