Hey everyone. The ortho program at my med school is great but I know for a fact that I would be happier at programs in the state I grew up in because that is where my family is. Is there like an unwritten rule that you must do a SUB-I at your home institution in addition to your away rotations? Would I be completely killing my chances at my home program if I did 3 away rotations instead of 1 home sub-I and 2 aways? Has anyone done this before?
I contemplated this last year and I was told that the attendings at your home institution are typically your strongest advocates regardless of whether you plan on matching there or not.

I followed this advice and I believe that it was well-founded and accurate advice, but I haven't matched yet so.....

It's great that you want to be closer to home and everything, but unless you are an all out superstar then your goal is to match PERIOD. Your best bet to do that is at your home program. The attendings and residents know you best there, and most programs favor their own medical students.

Even if you don't plan on ranking your home program highly (or not at all) many other programs will want to see a "Chairman's Letter" as one of your required LOR's. Unless you are a super stud, or your home program is very small, this is usually a very non-personal "stamp of approval" by your program's chairman to say that you would do a decent job as a resident. I'm not sure how all program chairmen would react, but I'm sure there may be some that may want you to do a month at your home program before giving you that "stamp" of approval. It is pretty standard, by my experience, to do a home rotation. I think you would be well served to find a month to do at home and "play by the rules", rather than buck the trend and risk not matching. You may be fine, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who have matched without doing a home month (there are many at med schools with no ortho programs), but I would suck it up and do the month, if nothing else, for the letter. Just my two cents.
