I'm an intern about to subscribe to JBJS (as per hint-hint/suggestion/order of my chairman)...wanted to ask attendings/upper year residents whether I should subscribe to just the American JBJS or the combined (British and American)...would rather do the former because it's cheaper. Just wondering how important/highly regarded the British volume is. Also, what are the benefits of the online JBJS? It seems you can have access to back issues also. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.
The best articles are from the American JBJS. If you want to save some money, I would skip the British version. You can always look over the table of contents online and copy any articles that look good.

JBJS is the standard journal to read in most residencies. The problem however is with subspecialization. Most of the really good articles are in their respective subspecialty journals. This has left JBJS over the recent years to mostly an Adult Recon and basic science journal. Despite this fact, it was required reading in our residency and was used for the journal club each month.

Which residency program are you at where they don't GIVE you a subscription to the journal. Also don't most programs have institutional subscription to the online version? Or is it one of those "wait till you're PGY-2 before you're really ortho" jobs?
