Trying to decide on where to rotate in NYC during 4th year. I ultimately want to do either joint or sports. Any input on Lenox Hill? Will the small amount of trauma be a problem in the future in private practice?
Hey,
I interviewed at most of the NYC programs, and I know someone at Lenox, so I can tell you a little bit about the program. Sweet location ? upper east side of Manhattan, richy rich population, cost of living is crazy high, but I think they give you pretty good subsidized housing. Unbelievable clinical experience, they have apparently 40+ attendings (most are private practice guys, and like half of them have done 2 fellowships), and with only 2 residents a year, you?re always the head honcho or 1st assist from the get-go. Apparently, the residents and fellows combined can only cover 70% of cases, the rest go uncovered because of the tremendous volume. They are strongest in sports, joints, and spine (huge names within those three)?as far as sports go, they do the Jets (and used to do the rangers and islanders, though I am not sure if they still do them), and of course with joints they have Ranawat. I have heard others say you come out of there as well trained as a fellow in sports and joints. Excellent hand and foot-ankle, but minimal trauma. They do 6 months at Harvard?s Children in Boston for Peds, a few months at Cornell Sloan Kettering for tumor, and a few months at Parkland in Dallas for trauma. Not sure what the residents think of the whole trauma experience, I am sure they don?t see the crazy wild stuff that you would at a major trauma center, but then again the lifestyle and more elective experience makes up for it. I?ve heard that the didatics are very good too, like 1-2 hours of conference every morning. But research opportunities are not as prevalent as big name academic institutions, though they are there. Residents get top of the line fellowships. Bottom line: kick ass program with an awesome lifestyle. Hope this helps. Later

Hey guys,

I was hoping some of you could compare/contrast mt sinai, columbia, and lenox hill. I have seen a few old posts on this, but I was wondering what the latest interviewees/applicants think. I have heard that columbia may be a little better academically, lenox may be little better clinically and has huge names, and sinai has a good balance between the two. Any thoughts...not trying to start any wars here, I think all three are great programs, but I just want to hear general impressions. thanks
