i know that this kind of thing gets debated in the forums all of the time, so all apologies if this is a boring post...

i have 5 LOR writers, 4 ortho, 1 neurosurg, 1 ortho is from an away rotation, 1 ortho is from home school chairman. i would like to send all 5 to all programs... how strict are the rules for # of LORs for each program? is it frowned upon if you submit more than the specified number? which would you not submit: the non-ortho, the away, the home ortho who knows me the least?

thanks for your time...
Do not send more than requested. That's a good way to get your file tossed for not following the directions. I would submit only from ortho.

ERAS will only allow 4 anyway. I have heard that you should send only the number requested and if they don't specify then send 4.

Agree with the above. Only send what the program requests. If they say 4 then send 4. If they want one letter from Internal medicine, then send them one letter from IM. Otherwise all letters from Orthopods.

thank you, your suggestions have been great.

one more question: if a program wants three, should i send three ortho from my home school, or two from my home school and one from an away rotation?

Send your best ones. By that I mean the ones that you think are from the most known with the best comments. Sometimes there is no way to know but if you have a big name then use it. But one should be from home at least
