I see that Maricopa has lost their accreditation effective at the end of this academic year. Does anyone know if this is permanent or are they actively trying to become accredited again? Just considering pullling the program out of the database.
Dear ERAS Applicant:

Thank you for submitting your ERAS application to the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program at Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, Arizona.

At the Annual ACGME Meeting it was decided to close the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program and restructure the program effective June 30, 2005. As a result of that decision, will not be interviewing this year. We wish you luck with your future medical endeavors.

Sincerely,

Peter N. Giovan, M.D.
Interim Program Director
Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program

from what I understand (this from a gen surg chairman); if a program folds the residents are dispersed amound remaining programs around the country. i think it may be ACGME rules or something. scrambling woulnd't make sense.

Many of the resident had already left. I know of a few maricopa residents who joined upper level postions (into positions of their current level of training - they didnt lose any time) into programs that I interviewed at. They started jumping ship about a year ago or more.

i interviewed with one of the pgy-1 guys from maricopa, and he told me that the pgy-1 through pgy-4's are dispersing out into programs that have enough capacity to take on another resident, as determined by the RRC. their funding will still come from maricopa and they will still be considered maricopa residents (ie, they don't take up a spot from the host program). the pgy-5's are evidently staying for their last year of training in phoenix. my (and the pgy-1 guy's) understanding was that they will be reorganizing then reopening "soon."
