Reply MAYO
Did anyone rotate at Mayo? Like with the posting about Harvard, it would be nice to get some insight about the working environment rather than just the ooh-ahh tour. Especially any comparison versus some other top programs.

Many thanks for any input.

Reply anyone do an away at Mayo?
C'mon, someone had to do an away there. I'm dying for some hands-on experience opinion about the program, especially in comparison to others.

Thanks in advance.

I rotated at Mayo. I'm very big on the program. What can I say, it's a powerhouse. Strong in joints, spine, tumor, foot/ankle. Weaker in sports, trauma, and peds. Very strong academic presence. Some guys are operating, while it seems that others are not. Mentorship type program: One resident follows one attending for 3 whole months. So you're doing all that guys/girls cases and learning how he/she does things. And then you go to another rotation. This is great if you get hooked up with someone that teaches and lets residents operate. But you're pretty muched hosed if it's the other way around. The myth about residents being bumped by fellows is absolutely false. There's 50 residents and only 8 fellows. There's more than enough to go around. Strong academic presence, but residents can do as much or as little as they want. There's a 6 month research block during your 2nd year. You have clinical responsibilities in the a.m. and go to basic science lectures in the p.m. You still take call too. Not as much trauma as say a university program, but a lot more than many community programs. They were seeing femurs, unstable pelvic frxs, and acetabulums when I was there. Overall, a very solid program. The main thing that hurts it is location, location, location. Rochester sucks. You have to ask yourself if it's a worthwhile sacrifice for 5 years.

Yep. I do go to Case. As if any one couldn't tell by the way I defended that whole "NIH research dollar thing" not to long ago =).

Reply props to Case
BJ- Thanks for your input about Mayo. Also, I want you and everyone else to know that I agree with you that Case is a top 10 program. I was extremely impressed when I interviewed there. A true research powerhouse! However, I was most surprised by Cleveland. It is actually a pretty cool city. You just have to know where to avoid, like all big cities. But there's a great night life and the city supports its teams as well as anyone.
