SLU's spine surgeon is/was military (I'm told he was Chief of Ortho for the Desert Storm operation but I can't confirm that, I've never asked him). I know at least two SLU ortho residents are in the navy also.

last year i interviewed at CWRU with an active navy guy, so i assume that they don't discriminate against military people.

Jackson, MS has a chair with signifigant military history and also has had at least one resident with military committment. Jackson has a very strong program with some first rate residents, faculty, and staff; however, they frequently fill all their spots with rotators.

I'm in the military and I found that everywhere I interviewed the faculty were very friendly towards me and would always make an effort to introduce me to their residents or faculty who had military ties. Your question should really be "Are there any programs that are not military friendly?" Anyway-U Miami is very keen on their relationship with the army trauma surgeons; UTSW trains the AF residents in ortho trauma; UConn, Browner told me he likes military applicants... it goes on. If you're sponsored they'll like you even more, although that was not a route I was intested in. Good luck.

JPS in Fort Worth has a chairman and a former chair that were both career military men. I am not sure if there were any military guys in theire program, but I am sure they are military friendly.

I am an intern at U South Carolina and was an Air Force flight surgeon for 6 years before starting.

The program here is very military friendly (I believe its an outstanding one in general if you are interested in a community based program). There are 3 attendings, including the chairman, who have a military background.

During my application process, I really didn't find any anti-military programs, and I think my military experience helped out a lot.

Thanks all for your help. I actually do research across the street from the Univ of Miami program, so I am familiar with it. The foot and ankle guy, Mizel, used to be a pilot in the Navy, sweet connection since I am a reservist Navy flight surgeon. I also had heard rumors about JPS, but I am glad someone could confirm that. It would be sweet to be sponsored by the Navy- I definitely would like to go back in. I applied for sponsorship but they had no openings for FTOS.
