Sorry it's taken so long for someone from N.O. to respond. I'm an intern in LSU's program, and I'm sitting here with another intern from LSU. Here's what we can tell you:
- LSU's program is up and running (we never stopped). University Hospital is opening this month, and I believe Ortho will be there full time in January or February. Currently, we are at Elmwood (the trauma center), Baton Rouge (another charity hospital), Kenner Regional (private), and Lafayette (public). We are also continuing our Sports rotation in Lake Charles (Dr. Drez).
Elmwood is seeing a ton of trauma, both penetrating and blunt. Baton Rouge is very busy, getting most of the patients in south Louisiana (including elective surgeries). Everyone operates a lot in B.R. Lafayette is also very busy, with 2 residents running 2 rooms. Everyone operates in our program. I did several ankles, wrists, and tibias. I also did a ton of hand stuff, all as primary surgeon (as an intern). Our staff is excellent and always available. We have just added Dr. Fred Wilson, a trauma guy, to our staff. He operates at Elmwood and Kenner with us. He is an excellent addition.
We are still accepting a full compliment of residents (4/yr). The residents are all close, and have weekly gatherings to cook/socialize. This was my top choice, even after the storm, and I have no regrets. This is a great program with very strong residents.
- As far as Tulane and Ochsner, I'll leave it up to them to fill you in on their programs.
Hey guys, this is the other intern. As far as the hurrican goes, I haven't really felt the effects of it except for the fact that I am in Baton Rouge 9m months of the year. This will likely change for the in coming class. You will be in New Orleans. My rotations are: Anesthesia, ER, ICU, Burn, Vascular, Plastics, Peds G Surg, Trauma surg, SICU and 3 months of Ortho. I am responsible for a lot but also get tons of guidance from upper levels.
We have excellent sports, trauma, peds and spine experience.
Since the hurrican a private foot and ankle rotation has opened up for the 4s with two fellowship trained docs in BR.
I think the strengths of our program are the residents, faculty, early operative experience and the confidence that this provides. There are still uncertainties with our program but things are moving forward in New Orleans. Personally, I am very happy to be at LSU and I wouldn't trade the experience.
