I am not from this program but as I understand it they are just getting off the ground. They are participating in the match as far as I know and maybe have a few residents in PgY I and II slots right now. Nothing beyond that. rest assured though, this is an approved residency and...as you say... some pretty big names are involved.

Looking at their website with more attention they DO have instructions for applicants and it seems like they have all figured out as a program.... another Florida program! Tampa (and Las Vegas) without an ortho residency made no sense... Has anyone rotated there? any USF students that could care to comment?

I am a current resident at the USF program. Let me assure anyone that is interested that this program is accredited and is for real. This is a great institution with some incredible faculty. We have one of the best program directors that you could ask for in Dr. Letson. It is a new program with some growing pains, but overall has so much to offer. It is accredited for 4 residents per year and currently has 4 PGY-2's and 2 PGY-1's; we are currently looking for 2 people to fill the PGY-1 vacancies by as early as October. And, we will be participating in the Match to fill a full intern class next year.

Rotations at several facilities have many BIG names in the Ortho community. The exposure, I think, will be in the top 10 in the country. The resources of the Tampa Bay area are among the Top in the country. We have good research opportunities in multiple areas such as oncology, sports, peds and basic sciences. It is a program for those who truly love the art and medicine of Orthopedics. The group of residents are some of the most devoted guys that you will ever meet, but at the same time they are great friends and laid back. We welcome any interested applicants to apply to be a part of a truly original and ground-breaking opportunity.

I am another current resident at USF.

Here are some facts and highlights that may give you more info about our program. The basics (i.e. sites for rotations, complete list of faculty, objectives, application info, etc) can be found in our website.

The ortho residency program at USF is re-starting after 15+ years. It is a joint venture between the most important academic centers and private practice groups in Tampa.

Our residency director (Dr. Letson) is the Education Director and the Chief of the sarcoma program at MOFFITT. He trained with Dr. Mankin at Harvard. I have worked at several "top notch" programs (as intern, postdoc clinical fellow, postdoc research fellow) and I have never been so encouraged by a faculty member. He is truly amazing.

Our current Chairman (Dr. Pedowitz) was the Chief of Sports Medicine at UCSD and for the past 8 years was also the orthopaedic surgery residency director at UCSD.

Tampa General Hospital (Level 1 trauma center) currently receives residents from NYU for their trauma rotation. Some of the attendings include George Haidukewych (past Chief of the Trauma Service at Mayo Clinic) and Roy Sanders (past Chairman of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and the Committee on Trauma for both the AAOS, and the AOFAS)

Tampa is a great big Florida city, affordable, with amazing restaurants and water activities. The Gasparilla festival, Busch Gardens, and Disney within a 1 hour drive makes it great for families and singles (Half of us are married and the other half are single).

Hi All,

I have registered USF Dept of Ortho Surgery & Sport Medicine into the ERAS match. It should be listed in the next week or so and we will participate thru the NRMP. Once it is listed we will be recruiting 4 PGY 1 to start July 08.

Yes, currently there are 2 PGY 1 positions available, however, it has not been decided if we are going to fill those positions or not. We will decide in October what we are going to do. That is our next faculty meeting.

Thank you for the numerous inquiries and CVs. Just an update - USF is listed in ERAS. I have downloaded the software and if you are planning to apply for a PGY 1 position for July 08, please use this system (no need to email me everything).

This is off the record...

If you have completed a PGY 1 internship year and are in a research year, there is a chance we may review your CV at our next board meeting in Oct to decide if we are going to hire a resident to fill the last PGY 1 position in Jan. This still has not been decided. We are not looking for residents currently in a PGY 1 intership year looking to swtich over to orthopedics and finish out the year. If you have completed a PGY 1 intership year and are in a research year and we hire you for Jan 08, you will be a PGY 1 completing 6 mo of an Ortho internship year.

I hope this clarifies some questions.

Hi Future Candidates,

The two PGY 1 positions available for Jan 08 have been filled. However, we are now in the recruitment process to hire 4 PGY1 positions for July 08.

We are accepting applications thru ERAS. The deadline is Nov 2, 2007.

Tip - submit at least 2 letters of recommendation (3 is better) and post your USMLE scores in your personal statement. That way every thing is there in the reviewers face. Interviews will be sometime in January.
