I have searched for some information on this topic but I was hoping to get a little more information. I am a third year medical student and I have a 242 on my Step 1. I have significant non-ortho research as I took three years off before medical school and did work in genetics. I have around 10 publications in major journals including NEJM and Nature and 2 first author papers in small journals. Since coming to medical school I have really gotten interested in ortho. I feel like any research I do during a four week block is not going to be that significant compared to what I have already done. Any thoughts on this? Any thoughts on my chances overall? I think ortho is for me and I really want to maximize my chances over the next year. Thanks a lot for any info you can provide.
If you want to maximize your chances, research should be way down the list, especially with already having productive research experiences. Focus on honoring as much of third year as possible and getting AOA.

In my opinion, doing any extra research in ortho specifically would be beneficial for the connections you could make with potential letter writers, not the research itself.

Thanks for the help. I think doing ortho research would be great for the connections but not that high yield for producing meaningful research as my time is so limited. Right now my goal is to focus on AOA and third year. Thanks again.
