Just found out I'll be doing an away at Northwestern this fall. Anyone out there who matched or rotated there? I'm looking for advice on who to work with. I know they have a very large (80) group of attendings most of which are private.

Hey Fix,
I'm still waiting on a response from NU. Can you tell me when you submitted your application?

I also just found out that I got an away at Northwestern and would appreciate any advice on specific people to work with or any other words of wisdom.
DOINJOINTS -- My application went out from my school sometime in April (although I had sent a copy to the coordinator there as well in March). I think that they are in the process of making their assignments now (I just heard from them yesterday), so you may want to contact the coordinator (Joan Broholm) just to check up on things. She was pretty good about letting me know the status of my app when I inquired.
FIXFX--when are you going to be there?

Thanks for the help...OrthoDreamer :smokin:

I also got an email from Joan yesterday for a spot in Sept but I had to decline it unfortunately so there's definately spots open.
My app reached there some time in March.

To Answer the original question:
1) If you want to laugh your way through your 4 week rotation at NWM then request Foot & Ankle. All (w/ the possible exception of 1) of the attendings are hilarious!!! You'll also do a lot because they like to teach...the only down side is well...Feet.
2) If you want to FEEL important because you're scrubbing in with Jordan's personal orthopod (who he occasionally flies back to see) or the orthopods that take care of the Bears and Blackhawks then request the Sports Med Service. Good group of guys.
3) If you want to work your butt off and never see Chicago, scrub lots of cases, etc. etc. then Joints is for you. You'll scrub and WATCH!!!!
4) If you want to spend 12-14 hours in the OR each day, doing 1-2 cases, never really seeing anything, trembling due to severe hypoglycemia and fatigue from retracting paraspinal tissue, having high strung attendings treat you like craps crap, laughing with the general surgeon who is happy to get $2000 bucks for the anterior approach and no post op care, then my man SPINE is for you!!! You might even meet the chairman...ohhhhhh!
5) If you don't want any of the other rotating med students to see or hear from you...then Childrens Peds ortho is for you...

Thanks Hulk. You have to love being a med student! I am on joints as of now...so it sounds like it will be busy. I grew up in Chicago so I don't really care about seeing the city. The main reason I am doing the rotation is to see what the program is like. Did you like NW when you were there? Where are you starting at this year?
