Anyone know if the number of applicants this year is going to be high or low? I heard a rumor that numbers are down.
wouldn't that be nice - I have 11/200 at my school

Just curious as to the source(s) of the rumor. It wouldn't surprise me though because I know at my school, many are heading for the 'green' and 'easy' pastures of anesthesiology and radiology. Many of these were former die hard 'surgery types' until they realized you actually have to work hard. I realize it's (surgery) not for everybody though. Regardless though...assume that the numbers are high and anything else will be a bonus I suppose.

The source of the rumor was a PGY-2 in NJ who speaks with the admissions secretary at his school.

There are 4/120 at my school.

Many are opting for anesthesiology/radiology.

the admissions secretary would have no way of knowing if numbers were down until september 1 when they can view the information on applicants. If they are down, I wouldn't expect them to be down very much. 80 hours has turned a lot of people on to the surgical specialties that otherwise would have went elsewhere.

I wouldnt believe any rumors about numbers being down. Ortho is always tremendously popular. Our program's number of applicants has risen for 3 years, despite not having a chair the last 2. I can only imagine what it will be like this year with a new chair in place....

Good luck,
