Regarding HSS - Does anyone know if they take people from med schools that aren't in the US News top 15-20? The only people I have ever heard matching there are from the elite med schools (Harvard, Penn, Hopkins, etc.) I ask because I am in a similar boat as jark10 and might be looking to do some ortho aways in summer '08. My med school certainly isn't crappy or anything - I'd say it's a decently respected state school, just barely making the US News top 50. I worked hard in MS-1 and MS-2, and broke 250+ on the step 1. Obviously, I wouldn't want to waste time doing away rotations at places that won't really consider me because I wasn't at a top 15 med school. I don't necessarily have a problem with it if this is indeed the case; after all, it's their program and they should feel free to use whatever selection criteria they want. I'd just like to know what the deal is beforehand.

There are, indeed, residents at HSS that are not from "big name" med schools.

Definitely -- i know several residents there from state schools that are not in the top 20

To further clarify our program here is a breakdown of our current residents:

PG-5 year: 4 rotated, 2 did not
PG-4 year: 2 rotated, 4 did not
PG-3 year: 3 rotated, 3 did not
PG-2 year: 2 rotated, 4 did not
PG-1 year: 3 rotated, 3 did not

Only caveat is that in the "did not" rotate group - 1 PG-1 and 1 PG-2 resident each called and spent 1 week since they could not coordinate doing a 1-month "acting internship".
