Once and for all guys for the MS#'s unsure of where to do away rotations:

1. Which places require an away rotation in order to get an interview?

2. Which places will automatically grant an interview if you do do a rotation there? (Not exactly the same question as No. 1).

Some of this from hearsay (but I think accurate based on my experience applying) and others from direct knowledge.

Loyola interviews non rotators but you have to be a stud to get it, they interview all rotators during the last week of your rotation.

UTSW interviews all rotators and about 20 non rotators. They usually rank to match 80% or so rotators because the chair is big on getting "a known quantity"

Penn interviews almost everyone that rotates.

Northwestern requires rotation to interview. Vandy will interview non rotators but I hear that you have no chance of actually matching unless you rotate. Carolinas interviews its rotators and a very few nonrotators.

Other places I interviewed at without rotating (for whatever that is worth to you): Arkansas, Baylor, UTMB, UTH, Long Island Jewish, Lenox Hill, Mayo, Vandy, GWU, USC Columbia, USC (in california), UCLA, Emory, SLUH, John Peter Smith.

Don't use these lists to decide where to apply, because you never know. I applied really broadly and got invited places that are top notch and also got denied at lower prestige programs. Apply everywhere you are interested, it is worth the money. Similarly, if you are really interested in a place that you hear places a premium on rotators then rotate there with one caveat: don't rotate at a big dog program if your numbers can't stack up to other applicants and rotators. I had good numbers (235, AOA) and rotated at three great top programs, but didn't match into any of them. In retrospect I probably should have aimed lower with my rotations, but I matched and that is the real object here.

Good luck. ):)

Georgetown and Northwestern pretty much require you to rotate if you want an interveie (there may be a couple of exceptions but rare)

It is very difficult to be granted an interview without rotating at thomas Jefferson.

West Virginia and Ohio State will guarantee you an interview slot if you rotate there. Hope that helps some.

My 2 cents:

Mayo: interviews ALL rotators at time of your rotation. so you won't have to trek up in winter.

Cleveland Clinic: does not interview all their rotators.

CWRU: I believe they interview all their rotators, unless you're an idiot or something =).

Got offers from the following without rotating: Kentucky, Harvard, Cincy, Indiana, MSU-kalamazoo, USC, UTSW, Toledo, Henry Ford, Howard, Albany, Louisville, and Loyola.
