Hello all:

MS3 getting ready to apply for ortho residency this upcoming cycle. I am currently working on my away schedule and wanted to know what is the consensus on scheduling an away in January? Will it be of benefit or a waste of time/money? Any advice would be appreciated.
Since the interviews for Ortho residencies are almost entirely held in Dec and Jan, doing an away during peak interview season would be a HUGE hindrance to your travels. I can't imagine any rotation, let alone an away, would like a student that is gone every weekend plus some weekdays. Highly recommend against it, not sure what purpose it would serve anyway.

Concur. Terrible idea. Will interfere with a ton of interviews. Be done with aways by Thanksgiving at the very latest.

I agree. Plan to be gone most of the month of January. I was only home 12 days during the whole month (most of them towards the end of the month). Also, I rescheduled an entire away rotation when I found out that one of my aways had an early interview for rotators because missing 1-1.5 days for an interview at another school seemed inappropriate to me. Make your aways count and don't shoot yourself in the foot by working hard but giving the program the impression that you'd rather be at other places interviewing.

Good luck!

totally agree with above. Leave January free. Almost all (except for 3) were in January
