The Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics, specifically the Center for Joint Preservation and Reconstruction Center is announcing several research opportunities for unmatched students who are still interested in going into orthopaedics.

We offer two unpaid opportunities until June. These jobs are designed for students who have the chance to do another away rotation and boost their CV. The main goal is to submit 10-15 abstracts for the AAOS 2008 meeting and work on two projects that lead to peer-reviewed publications. The average student who participated in this program had 6 abstracts and 1-2 papers last year.

The other offer is a two-year paid research fellowship starting mid summer. Salary is based on experience and includes fringe benefits. The candidate should have scores in the 210-230 range on USMLE step 1. We do not consider scores below 205. The average number of pubmed-listed publications of the last three fellows is 16 with acceptances at national meetings in the two digit range. FYI, all of our fellows have been sucessfully matched into a orthopaedic residency program after two years!

At this point, we do not consider applications for a one year position but there might be an opening for a prestigious biomechanics and orthopaedic research fellowship in summer 2007. The fellowship position is 6 months in New Jersey and 6 months in Baltimore. This is a very competitive fellowship and is usually only open to residents and fellows who are already advanced in their training.

Congratulations to all students who matched for 2007!!!

Please email your ERAS CV including cover letter and board scores to tseyler@lifebridgehealth.org . Thanks.
Since we had quite a few applications last night, I wanted take a chance and answer some questions in the forum:

1.) Why a two year and not a one year fellowship?

If your starting date is June/July 2007 you are most likely not a better candidate in the match for 2008. In general, it will tkae you about 10-12 weeks to submit your first paper and before your first aceptance is coming in the application deadline has passed. We are offering this position for over 6 years now and have therefore, significant experience. However, having said this, working in the department for two years will give you plenty opportunities to publish in as mentioned before, everyone who decided to stay entered the match with a two digit publication number.

2.) Why do you offer the two unpaid short-term positions?

The hospital does not support short-term positions and there is nothing similar in the HR job listings. Furthermore, the hospital is not willing to pay fringe benefits for three months. Why do we still offer this position??? Because we think this is an excellent opportunity for people who decide to go the general surgery prelim route. BEfore you start your prelim you work with us, submit abstracts for the AAOS 2008 and manage to get your fingers on two projects. These projects will be published and you will be an author while finsihing up your prelim. The year after you will have two opportunities, go through the match and be a better applicant and secondly use your pimped CV and your prelim experience to apply for a PGY-2 position.

3.) Application process

We wish everyone good luck in the scramble and exept applications through Friday morning. We will then review all applications and contact the top four. the top four will be invited to spend a full day with us in the clinic/OR/research division. At the end of the day, there will be a formal interview with four faculty members and two fellows.

4.) Location and salary two year research fellowship

The Rubin Institute of Advanced Orthopedics is located at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. It has two divisions, the Center for Joint Preservation and Reconstruction headed by Dr Michael Mont and the Center for Limb Lenghtening headed by Dr. Dror Paley. The Rubin Institute itself is part of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery here at Sinai with over 40 full time faculty members. Some of them everyone should know who wishes to enter an orthopaedic residency program (Levine, Herzenberg, Paley, Mont, Waldman, Aboulafia). The salary will be $34,000 plus fringe benefits. Based on credentials, a limited license for the state of Maryland can be obtained and clinical duties can be assigned.

5.) Visa/Greencard

At this point, we do not sponsor any visas or greencards. Sorry.

6.) Formal applications

Please copy and paste the original ERAS CAF/CV in the email and attach board scores. Applications that are incomplete or do not include the requested information are discarded.

7.) Duration of fellowship/questions

We do not consider offering a one year fellowship. Please do not inquire about it. More questions feel free to email me tseyler@lifebridgehealth.org

8.) Publication record

Just a few numbers...open pubmed and look for

two year fellows: "marulanda g", "ragland ps", "seyler tm", "ajadhyaksha ad"
short-term students: "plate jf", "marker dr", "gordon n"

I forgot...you will be allowed to do one away rotation during your fellowship. Typically, the fellows are doing this rotation in the August September of the year they are going to enter the match. You can do the away at a program of your choice but we recommend following our advice. Also, the fellows is entilted to travel to the AAOS meeting to present his work. Hope this answers most of the questions.
