you will probably be fine .... but you have forgettable numbers ... you need something that will help you stand out .... you AI's will be key ... you letters will be key ... you must shine ....

and you MUST give good interview ... if you fall flat, you may end up in the middle of the pack ....

Dude I share your pain. I am almost in the same boat as you. I am yet to honor an rotation during 3rd year. Now 0 for 4 with 2HP out of the 4 evaluations so far. Partly my fault but I am unfortunately in a group of over-zealous students and I am yet to put my best foot foward...partly my fault

I am yet to do Gen surg or any surgical rotations and hopefully I get get some love from those that think as I do.

It is sad that I have come to a point where i might have to re-evaluate my career options based on a rather subjective system

I've also had kind of the same experience. Only 1 A so far in medicine, the rest all B+ (UT is wierd and has a letter grading system). The crappiest thing is that my school is so slow with returning clinical grades that I still don't know what I got on a rotation that ended 3 months ago.

Despite all this negative stuff, some things like research and pubs, Step 1, and good potential LOR's give me hope. Try to find things that give you hope and concentrate on those. Neat trick I learned from Psych

Please do not fret over this. Your 232 gets you past most programs "screens" and your lack of clinical honors is only 1 aspect of your overall application. As always, you just need your foot in the door and then you can achieve your desired goal - an orthopaedic residency position. Kick butt on your sub-internships and that will more than make up for any perceived deficiency in clinical honors.

Despite how much all of us hate doing gross things like pelvic exams and hemoccult exams, it's part of what you do to get where you want to go. If you blow off some rotations because they "are not important to orthopedics", then it may show through on your application. Don't forget, comments from your rotations go into your Dean's letter. While you may get "Johnny was a good student and worked hard" from your average performance, someone else is getting "one of the best students I have worked with and would be a great asset to any residency program." If you work your ass off people will notice, especially if you figure out how to actually be helpful to your senior resident. It's not about topping the gunner in your group; we're all gunners. It's about paying attention to detail, being knowledgeable about your patients (but not being a show-off), and making your resident's life easier. If your performance on the shelf exam is less than stellar, try to make up for it with your clinical performance.

Pre-clinical : honors in two thirds

Clinical : all honors (I'm working my butt off!!!!)

One home rotation.

Hopkins rotation now in may (pediatric orthopedic surgery - heyyy the director of residency program is there)
