I am just starting intern year next week, but I am planning on a career in Peds Ortho. I did one month of Peds during my 4th year and some research with a Pedi-Pod, and I was really turned on to the field. I agree with the above comments, and here's my 2 cents...
Pros: great patients, good lifestyle, get to deal with the whole body while still being a specialized orthopod, one of the least popular specialties in ortho so easier to get the fellowship that you want
Cons: a lot of clinic and less OR (this may not be such a negative, as this is what allows for the nicer lifestyle), lower end of the pay scale as far as orthopaedic surgeons go (but your kids will surely not be starving), many chronic patients such as Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy
Overall, I think it is a great subspecialty and I can't wait to get into it. It is, however, very different from adult orthopaedics and you really have to experience it first hand to know if it is the right field for you.
Hope this helps.....
