Sorry if this is an obvious question. As an MS at an academic center, I am curious as to how private practice orthopods work without residents, i.e. do they round on their patients on the weekend (7 days a week)? Are they on call 24 hours a day for in-patients? Again, sorry if these are obvious, but it seems like in all fields, med school differs from the real world.
in the real world (private practice, community), nurses know how to take care of patients without calling every five minutes to tell you that the patient is thinking about having a bowel movement. that is one big difference!!!

usually weekend call is split up by whoever is on call for the group, but this can vary from group to group.

It can be variable with different groups. I would say that the vast majority of groups has the weekend call guy round on their patients. That's what we do and it works out well. In other groups the call doc rounds on patients daily so even during the week, you only round when you are on call. However, this type of coverage is unusual unless you are covering multiple hospitals.

The third option is having your PA round on your patients which happens in a few cases.
