Howdy,
I am a 1st year student who is concerned about what to do this summer. I can choose between one of two options. First, I can do a "research" position at my medical school. It truly is not research because it basically is a less research and more retrospective on past procedures. I would also get some time to scrub in and get to know the program leaders at my school (or so I am told). However, I wouldn't be published and the program is not very well known. My second option is to take a very competitive position doing diabetes research which could deal with surgery and pathology (such as wound healing). I potentially could get published with this position albeit not in surgery or ortho. In excess to this position I could also shadow some ortho's in the area where this research postion is located. This latter position is with a top notch very well known medical institution. All in all, I guess this is a priorities question. Which summer position would be more favorable for me if that eras and interview time should come? Is one type of research seen as more favorable than another?
-Thanks
