question about moonlighting

I was talking to a Emergency Medicine intern buddy of mine today who's at Univ. of Chicago and he was mentioning how they can moonlight in fast-track from their intern year and make $50/hr for 12 hr shifts. I'm just curious how this works for ortho surg programs. I understand how much more demanding a surgical internship probably is but is there any moonlighting in ortho residencies and if so, what year do you usually do it? During my AI's, it seemed as if you're busy as h$%& during all 5 years!!
I know that when I was at Harbor-UCLA, one of the chiefs was moonlighting at a Kaiser Hospital on some weekends and making about $60/hour...It is somewhat frowned upon my some programs, but they don't need to know...Other programs outright forbid it...At HJD one of the residents was talking about moonlighting, so I guess they do it there too...Not sure about details, but I guess moonlighting can be done in the latter years of residency... :smokin:

When resident work hours start July 1, they are supposed to include any moonlighting as well.. I don't know how they will monitor it, but it woiuld be impossible to moonlight and stay under 80.

I've talked to guys at three different programs that are allowed/have the opportunity to moonlght in their senior year a certain number of times through the year. They make some extra cash to buy Christmas presents and such, but are definitely limited in how often they can do it.

Yeah,

Ortho2003 makes a good point. With the whole 80 hr work week thing, it's close to impossible to moonlight nowadays. our program pretty much forbids moonlighting. I kind of sucks, but I think I'd rather be spending time with my girlfriend or family in my free time any way. There's tons of money out there to be made after residency anyway.

At my program you are allowed to moonlight as long as you have a 50% or greater on the OITE. There is ED work as well as a unique ortho opportuinity as a PGY4 and PGY5 that pays buckets of cash. However, as previously mentioned this blasted 80 hour work week is putting the blue screws to all of us.
