Heading into this summer I was supposed to start working on a low-key, fun project, but now it looks like that is going to fall through. My question is whether I should hurry to see if I can become involved in something else (non-orthopaedic)? Otherwise, I have kept up running, am helping to organize a week-long program for high school students, and will do a little work for my father. I could also possibly help on the medical staff of a kids camp. I am one of those people with OK grades where research will probably help them. I have heard though, of third-years at my school doing a short-term (~ a month or so) reserch experience before they apply to residencies and didn't know if I sould instead just count on this as a good alternative.

orthorun...it sounds like you are a 1st or second year from your note which in my mind is the best time to get involved in ortho research...it helps you get to know the people at your program early and you will have time to get your stuff presented/published before you leave (the process can take up to two years or longer from start of project to publication). you also have more time to work on things as a second year for example because you are usually out of class some afternoons whereas you will be working late 3rd year and 1 month will help you get some work done but you will definately have to do much more on your own "spare" time. During third year it is more important to spend this time concentrating on rocking you clinical rotations. For apps definately ortho research would be best if you can but other research is still a plus but i don't think as much so. generally ortho programs require thier residents to publish one or two papers during residency and if you want to help they are glad for it. i'd approach your chair or res director and ask if they know of any projects going on and if anyone possibly could use some help. Good luck!
