Anyone have any recommendations for programs in the South/East Coast area? As far as I can tell from talking with people and reading posts, I should be competitive.
If you're looking for "bigger name" programs, a couple you might wanna consider include UT Southwestern, Duke, and Campbell Clinic. Others include Vanderbilt, Emory, and Miami. Of course there are many other good programs down in the south too.

I've worked with Campbell, Atlanta Medical Center, and Univ of Mississippi, so I can give a little info on those.

Campbell - obviously one of the biggest name programs, awesome combination of city trauma and private practice, excellent away elective, definitely get all subspecialties well-covered.

AMC - under-recognized program, great chairman who does tons of trauma (even though it is a level 2 center, these guys are doing more than a lot of level 1's), residents get along well, lots of upside.

Mississippi - as rebelpod said, this is an awesome group of guys and the chairman is really great and involved. Tons of trauma and autonomy. Just brought in a tumor guy, so all subspecialties are going to be pretty well covered.

Aside from those 3, I don't have much info personally. For a smaller program, I've heard great things about Greenville, SC.

Has anybody heard anything about the program in Jacksonville? I've been hearing rumblings that the program is looking for a new Chairman and some new attendings right now. Any news would be great.

I can comment on some southeast programs I interviewed at last year.

Campbell Clinic- Good program with a nice mix of private and academics. Program is spread out so there is lots of driving and afternoon/evening conferences. Memphis was not the nicest city I visited, but seemed affordable.

Greenville- Also nice mix of private and academics, but more private/community based. Residents seemed very happy and were treated well. Shriners Hospital is there where Greenville, Duke, and CMC residents rotate.

Carolinas Medical Center- Very impressive program also with balance of private and academics. Operative experience and research opportunities were emphasized. The program offers a research fellowship. Charlotte seemed like a very nice city to live in. Tough to get a spot there, however .

UNC- Was lacking spine and Tumor when I interviewed. Awesome chairman (Dirschl) recently took over. Could be a program on the rise. Offers a 6 yr research spot.

Duke- Great program and group of residents. Seemed like OR's could get crowded with so many fellows around, though.

Miami- Very good program. Tons of trauma and OR experience. Word hard/play hard mentality was evident. Seemed like the ideal program for a single guy who wants to party like they did in college (or more). Females in the program also seemed very happy .
